How to Keep Track of Medications for Seniors: A Simple Daily System

When someone takes several medicines a day, it is easy to forget a dose or take one twice. This is common for older adults and for the family members who care for them. A simple written routine can make each day calmer and safer.

1. Make one complete medication list

Write down every medicine in one place: the name, the dose, the time of day and what it is for. Include vitamins and over-the-counter products too. Keep the list up to date whenever the doctor changes something.

2. Check off each dose

A weekly chart with a box for each medicine and each day removes the guessing. After taking a dose, put a check mark in the box. If you are not sure whether a dose was taken, the chart tells you.

3. Use large, clear writing

Small print is hard to read, especially in the morning or in low light. Large print pages and big boxes make it easier for seniors to keep the log on their own.

4. Track refills before they run out

Write the date of each refill and when the next one is due. A quick look once a week shows what needs to be ordered from the pharmacy.

5. Bring the log to every appointment

Doctors and pharmacists can help much more when they see exactly what is being taken and when. Note questions, side effects and changes in a notes section so nothing is forgotten during the visit.

Extra tips for caregivers

  • Keep the log in the same place as the pill organizer.
  • Write emergency contacts and allergies on the first pages.
  • If more than one person helps, everyone uses the same log.
